PILES AND HOMOEOPATHY

What are haemorrhoids?

Haemorrhoids commonly known as piles is a condition where the veins around the rectum and anus are swollen.

Symptoms of haemorrhoids:

Many times, piles may remain unnoticed and do not cause any pain or symptoms. But sometimes symptoms may present as -

  • Discharge of blood while passing stool.

  • Itching in and around rectum

  • Pain and burning during defecation which remains even after passage of stool.

  • Swollen mass protruding from the anus.

Classification of haemorrhoids:

Haemorrhoids have been classified into four grades depending upon size, location and degree of prolapse.

  • Grade I – there are no symptoms and piles do not protrude out from anus.

  • Grade II – piles protrude out the anus but goes back on their own.

  • Grade III – piles protrude out of anus, go inside when pushed by fingers manually.

  • Grade IV - piles protrude outside and cannot be pushed back inside.

Causes of haemorrhoids:

Haemorrhoids occur due to dilatation of veins in the rectal and anal region, because of which haemorrhoids develop.

Following are the causes which play role in development of haemorrhoids -

  • Chronic constipation or diarrhoea

  • Pregnancy

  • Sometimes due to ageing

  • Obesity

  • Low intake of fibre in diet, which leads to formation of hard stools and excessive straining.

  • In some patients, family history of piles is found.

  • Stress

Complications of haemorrhoids:

  • Anaemia due to much blood loss during stool.

  • Infection

  • Anal fistula

  • Gangrene

  • Sometimes, faecal incontinence may also occur.

Management and Treatment of haemorrhoids:

  • Most of the cases of piles get better and subside by lifestyle changes, therefore lifestyle changes must be done.

  • Increasing the intake of water throughout the day is very much important.

  • Including more fibre, fruits and green vegetables in your diet is also beneficial.

  • Weight reduction helps in prevention of complications of piles.

  • Regular exercise is equally important.

  • Straining while passing should be avoided.
