We all have heard about Alfalfa tonic either directly from our homoeopathic doctors or indirectly from our friends, family or relatives. 

So today I am going to tell you all about this Alfalfa Tonic/ Syrup. 

 

What is Alfalfa? 

  • Alfalfa is commonly known as California Clover or Lucerne; its botanical name being Medicago sativa 

  • Alfalfa has been known since long for its favourable influence on nutrition. 

  • It tones up the appetite and digestion thus resulting in improved mental and physical vigor, along with weight gain. 

  • Very useful medicine for disorders characterised by malnutrition, for example - insomnia, melancholy, nervousness, nervous indigestion etc. 

  • Alfalfa medicine has been known to have effect on diabetes insipidus and phosphaturia. 


What is Alfalfa Tonic? 

Using Alfalfa as the main medicine along with some other important homoeopathic medicines to correct the body’s requirement of vigor, better appetite and digestion, a tonic is prepared to help you gain weight and increase natural immunity of the body. 

Different homoeopathic companies have added different medicines in this tonic to make it more efficient as per your body’s requirement. 

 

I am mentioning some common constituent medicines which are usually present in alfalfa tonic apart from Alfalfa. 

  • Acidum Phosphoricum – very useful in treatment of both mental and physical debility. Weakness due to loss of vital fluids, acute diseases, grief, diarrhoea, diabetes etc. Is covered beautifully by this medicine. Also useful in relieving the pain of cancer.  

  • Avena Sativa – has a very good action on nervous exhaustion, sexual weakness, weakness after exhausting diseases. Also, a good medicine for sleeplessness, especially of alcoholics, nervous states of mind commonly seen in females, coryza and colds. 

  • Cinchona Officinalis – useful in patients suffering from debility after exhaustive discharges, due to loss of vital fluids together with a nervous erethism. Improves digestion, by acting on stomach, liver and intestines. Patients also suffer from influenza associated with weakness. 

  • Cinnamomum Ceylanicum – useful for haemorrhages from bowels, nose bleed, post-partum haemorrhage etc. A good medicine for gastric disturbances and hysterical attacks. Patients suffer from nausea and diarrhoea along with acidity. 

  • Hydrastis Canadensis – indicated in old, easily tired people, suffering from weight loss and weakness. People with weak muscular power, poor digestion and obstinate constipation, have a marked action on the liver. Emaciation and prostration are usually seen in the patient. 

  • Kalium Arsenicosum – a good medicine for restlessness, nervousness and anaemia. 

  • Kalium Phosphoricum – it is one of the greatest remedies for nerves. Indicated in weak and tired patients, who lack nerve power and suffer from mental and physical depression. Weakness occurs due to over work, mental excitement and excess or worrying. There is loss of memory, slightest of work seems to be a heavy task to the patient. 

  • Nux Vomica – very good remedy for debility after overuse or abuse of medicines. Patient is thin, spare, quick, active, nervous and irritable and does a good deal of mental labour. Patient seeks stimulants like coffee, tobacco or alcohol in excess to calm down his mental excitement. Because of the sedentary lifestyle and unhealthy eating habits, patients suffer from a lot of gastric disturbances like dyspepsia, flatulence, colic, constipation, unsatisfactory stool, etc.  

 

Apart from these medicines, some companies add a few other below mentioned medicines. 

  • Ashwagandha – this medicine is known for its action on the tissue building, it helps in controlling stress and overcoming fatigue. It has the power to enhance the vitality and vigor of the body. 

  • Calcarea Phosphoricum – very good remedy indicated in children who suffer from anaemia, feeble digestion, acute diseases and chronic wasting diseases. There is a tendency of glandular enlargement and headaches. 

  • Ferrum Aceticum – indicated in constant trembling of the whole body. Patient remains tired and drowsy and suffers from emaciation. Children who are thin, weak, pale and get tired easily require this medicine. 

  • Five Phos – it is a very efficient biochemic combination, having a very good action on the brain and nerves. Useful in cases of general weakness, weakness after exhausting diseases, lack of nervous power and anaemia. 

  • Ginseng – this is a very good medicine which helps in increasing your immunity and prevents you from frequent respiratory infections, coughs and colds. It helps the body in dealing with stress, fatigue and diseases. Useful for headache, backache, weakness and stiffness in back. 

 

What does Alfalfa Tonic do?

How to take this tonic and when (Dosage)? 

For adults – one tablespoon, three times a day, 15-30 minutes before the meal.
