Thuja Occidentalis has gained a great amount of reputation in today’s world as a medicine for treatment of warts, and many amongst us have seen someone take this medicine or have taken it ourselves. 

But there is a lot more to Thuja than just treatment of warts. 

So, let’s see what more secrets this medicine holds. 

General Introduction: 

Thuja Occidentalis is commonly known as arborvitae – which means – tree of life. 

It is known as the tree of life because of its medicinal properties which are present in its bark, sap and twigs. 

In Homoeopathy, medicine is prepared from the tincture of fresh green twigs and was proved by Dr. Hahnemann who was founder of the Homoeopathic system of medicine. 

Thuja has a marked action on the following parts: 

• Genito-Urinary tract 

• Gastro-Intestinal tract 

• Skin 

• Mind 

• Nerves 

• Glands 

• Head – occiput 

• Left side of the body generally. 

Constitution of a Thuja patient 

• Well suited to hydrogenoid constitution. 

• Sickly looking individuals. 

• Fleshy people with dark complexion, black hair and unhealthy skin. 

• People who suffer from bad effects of vaccination or from suppressed or badly treated gonorrhoea. 

• These people mostly have tendencies for warts, condylomatas or some kind of Sycotic growths. 

Mental symptoms: 

• Fixed ideas; patient feels as if his soul and body were separated; as if a strange person were at his side; as if something alive is present in abdomen. 

• Music makes the patient weep with trembling of feet. 

• Forgetful. 

• Aversion to life, does not like his life. 

Head: 

• Patients requiring Thuja mostly suffer from Left sided headaches. 

• Pain in the head as if pierced by a nail. 

• Vertigo as from motion of a swing, when rising from a seat, or when lying down, or looking into the air. 

• Heaviness in the head especially in the morning on waking. 

• Congestion of blood in head, pulsation in temples. 

• Patient likes to wrap his head warm. 

• Scalp is painful to touch. 

• White scaly dandruff. 

Eyes: 

• Eyes are painful and have burning sensation, shooting pain in eyes in bright light. 

• Ptosis, lids heavy as lead, falls down several times in a day. 

• Ophthalmia of neonates. 

• Iritis, jagged iris, scleritis. 

• Styes and tarsal tumours. 

• Patient sees green stripes floating in front of his eyes and is frightened by them. 

• Sensation of dryness of eyes. 

• Eyelids get agglutinated especially at night.

Ears: 

• Chronic otitis of ears associated with putrid foul-smelling discharge. 

• Cracking on empty swallowing. 

• Pale reddish polyps in ears, which bleeds easily.

Nose: 

• Coryza is fluent with cough and hoarseness of voice. 

• There is discharge of greenish thick mucus with blood on blowing the nose. 

• Painful pressure at the root of the nose.

Face: 

• Redness and heat of face, with marbled appearance of veins on face. 

• Oily greasy looking skin. 

• Light brown freckles on face. 

• Pain in trigeminal nerve after suppression of gonorrhoea or eruption on ears. 

• There might be swelling of submaxillary glands.

Mouth: 

• Painful blisters which are white in colour are present in the mouth. 

• Toothache after drinking tea with pain extending into the jaws. 

• Tip of tongue is very painful. 

• Teeth decay next to gums. 

• Varicose veins on tongue and mouth.

Stomach: 

• Patient suffers from nausea and uneasiness in the region of the stomach. 

• Total loss of appetite, patient does not feel hungry at all. 

• Dyspepsia due to tea drinking. 

• Does not like meat and potatoes and cannot eat onions.

Abdomen: 

• Abdomen is distended, there are indurations in abdomen. 

• Flatulence and rumbling sensation in the abdomen, protruding here and there. 

• Chronic diarrhoea usually aggravated after breakfast.

Stool and Anus: 

• Obstinate constipation due to intussusception of intestines or from inactivity of intestines. 

• Discharge of blood during stool. 

• Burning soreness in anus, remaining throughout the day. 

• Patients might suffer from fistula and fissure in ano. 

• Piles swollen; pain worse while sitting. Burning, stitching pains at the anus. 

Urinary System: 

• Urine stream is small and split. 

• Bladder feels paralyzed, and has to wait for urination. 

• Inflammation of kidneys. 

• Good medicine for Diabetes Mellitus, there is presence of sugar in urine. 

• Severe cutting pains after urination. 

• Sudden and urgent desire to urinate, but cannot control.

Male: 

• Patient feels pain in penis, along with inflammation of glans and prepuce. 

• Complaints associated with prostate. Prostate is enlarged. 

• Very useful medicine in cases of sexually transmitted diseases. 

• Cauliflower-like growths; fig warts. 

• Painful erections at night which causes sleeplessness in a patient. 

Female: 

• Warty growths on perineum and vulva. 

• Very sensitive vagina, thus preventing coition (intercourse). 

• Leucorrhea is profuse and thick in character and green in colour. 

• Patient might suffer from Recto-Vaginal fistula. 

• Patient has a repeated history of abortion at third month of pregnancy.

Respiratory System: 

• A very good medicine for asthma in children. 

• Dry, hacking coughs more in the afternoon. 

• Patients suffer from chronic laryngitis.

Neck and Back: 

• Stiffness and tension in the nape of neck, loins and back. 

• Swelling of glands and veins of neck. 

Extremities: 

• Rheumatism with numb feeling which is better from cold and sweating and worse in warmth and on moving. 

• Crippled and brittle nails. 

• Cracking in joints when stretching them. 

• Patient feels that his Limbs are made of wood or glass and feels as if they would break easily. 

• Indicated in cases of ingrowing toe nails.

Skin: 

• Painful sensitiveness of skin associated with itching. 

• Dirty looking, dry, hairy skin with brown spots. 

• Freckles and blotches. 

• Warts on any part of the body. 

• Patients might suffer from Polyps, tubercles, naevi, carbuncles. 

• Eruptions only on covered parts of the body, eruptions burn violently worse after scratching. 

• Useful in cases of herpes.

Sleep: 

• Disturbed and unrefreshing sleep. 

• Patients might suffer from constant sleeplessness. 

• Sexual dreams without emission but painful erection on waking. 

Fever: 

• Chill begins in the thighs. 

• Shivering, every morning, without thirst. 

• Sweat profuse on genitals; foul, oily, pungent, sometimes sweetish smelling like honey, sometimes garlicky in odour; might stain clothes yellow. 

• Sweat only on uncovered parts, or on all parts except the head. 

• Sweat at the beginning of sleep. 

• Burning in the face without redness; dry heat on covered parts.
